How To Clean Your Golf Clubs

Written By TJ Biggs

Cleaning your golf clubs are more important than you think. Cleaning your clubs regularly will not only help them last longer, but in some extreme situations dirty clubs can actually affect your clubs performance in terms of distance and accuracy.

Having played golf for over 15 years and having a bit of OCD I have always cleaned my clubs regularly and have found the best methods to do so.

The bare minimum you will need is a cloth and a bucket of warm water. To take it a bit further using dishwashing liquid and having a soft bristled brush will help get rid of any dirt you have on your clubs.

Let’s dive into the method below.

Materials Needed:

  • Warm water
  • Bucket
  • Clean cloth
  • Soft bristle brush (toothbrush or nail brush)
  • Dish washing liquid

Step By Step Guide On How To Clean Your Golf Clubs

  1. Fill a bucket with warm water and a teaspoon of dish washing soap solution.
  2. Dip your golf club heads into the solution, allowing them to soak for a few minutes. Be sure to keep the club shafts and grips out of the water to avoid any damage. Do not soak your woods in the water.
  3. Use a soft-bristled brush, such as a toothbrush or a specialized golf club brush, to scrub the grooves of the club face.
  4. Rinse each club head with warm water and wipe them dry with a clean towel.
  5. For more stubborn stains or dirt buildup, you can use a golf club cleaning tool with a wire brush to gently remove the dirt.
  6. Once the club heads are clean, wipe down the shafts and grips with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or sweat that may have accumulated.
  7. You can use a soft bristled brush to scrub your grips if they are extremely dirty, but don’t scrub too hard.
  8. Be sure to use only warm water when cleaning your grips, depending on the detergent your grips may have a reaction to it.
  9. Dry the clubs thoroughly with a clean towel before returning them to your golf bag.

How to Make Homemade Golf Club Cleaner

This is as simple as adding a teaspoon of dish washing liquid to a bucket of water.

There is no need for any fancy cleaners or solutions.

How Often Should I Clean My Golf Clubs?

I would say after every round, however this can take some time and isn’t that enjoyable.

If you clean your club heads after every shot, then doing a full club clean once every four rounds will be fine.

How And Where Should You Store Your Golf Clubs?

Simply storing your clubs in your golf bag is all you need to do, make sure it is stable as you do not want the bag to fall over and potentially damage any of your clubs.

As an extra precaution you can put your rain cover on, this will prevent any dust or water that may come into contact with your clubs.

The best place to store your clubs would be in a cool dry place. Make sure it is not damp or any water can come into contact with your clubs, this may cause them to rust.

How Do I Clean Rust Off My Golf Clubs?

The quick way to remove rust from your golf clubs is to use vinegar.

  • Dip a clean cloth in a bowl of vinegar
  • Rub the club head or shaft until the rust comes off
  • Use a damp wet cloth to remove any vinegar that may be left on the clubs or shaft
  • Dry the clubs with a dry cloth

You can also use a mid to low strength rust remover if the vinegar is not strong enough.

Make sure your shafts don’t rust too much, they may be unable to be cleaned in extreme conditions, forcing you to replace them.

Conclusion

Cleaning your clubs is more important than you think. It can impact the longevity of your clubs and their performance such as distance and control.

All you need to clean your clubs is dishwashing liquid, a damp cloth and a bucket of water.
