Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Irons – Review

Written By TJ Biggs

Mizuno’s Hot Metal line has been a consistent favorite among golfers seeking a blend of distance and forgiveness without compromising on brand appeal.

The latest addition to this legacy, the Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal irons, continues to uphold these ideals while introducing enhancements in distance, control, and spin.

With technologies such as 4335 Nickel Chromoly, an 8% thinner clubface and their innovative V-Chassis and Deep CG you can expect these irons to perform extremely well.

Key Features Of The Mizuno JPX923’s

Looks

The Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Irons showcase a balance of game improvement aesthetics and sleek lines. At address, the mid-size design will give you confidence, featuring a refined top line with strategic weight distribution and subtle offset. The blade length is generous, giving you confidence without overshadowing the ball.

What stands out is the White-Satin Brush finish, it has a blend of matte and chrome elements. This finish enhances the irons’ appeal at address and is a testament to Mizuno’s attention to detail. For those inclined towards a larger footprint, the JPX923 Hot Metal HL irons are worth exploring.

Sound & Feel

While not forged, the Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal irons give you great feedback upon impact. The short irons deliver a firm thump and a medium volume “clap” sound, progressively intensifying through the longer irons, aligning perfectly with their explosive performance. The irons offer excellent feedback, differentiating pure strikes from slightly off-center hits.

Performance

The key innovation within the Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal irons lies in the use of Nickel Chromoly material, which is significantly stronger than the previous models. This allows for an 8% thinner clubface, resulting in increased ball speeds.

The irons produce exceptional ball speeds and consistent smash factors, attributes that aid golfers seeking both distance and forgiveness. A wider sole in the thinnest part of the sole contributes to improved forgiveness and helps maintain ball speed even on minor mishits.

What sets these irons apart is their intelligent spin production. This spin profile caters to diverse scenarios, offering the ability to shape shots and precise control in the scoring irons, while maintaining a balanced spin for consistent carry in the mid and long irons.

Control & Forgiveness

The level of forgiveness was remarkable. Even miss hit shots still found their way onto the green. Admittedly, shots that were significantly miss hit weren’t ideal, but their performance exceeded my initial expectations.

Despite its classification as a ‘game improvement’ iron, you might think that shaping the ball (achieving high and low shots, fades, and draws) could be challenging. However, that is not the case. I could hit various shot shapes with these irons. While they might not offer the same ease as a Players’ iron, I never encountered a situation where I couldn’t execute the desired shot with confidence.

Value For Money

Being slightly cheaper than other top performers, the JPX923 Hot Metal irons are great value for money. They certainly are not the cheapest irons on the market, however you definitely get a bang for your buck.
